Welcome to my journal. I'm listed as an author under Laurie and
I was nominated in 2007 for new slash author at Light My Fires Awards and in 2008 for new gen and new slash author. Several of my stories have been nominated for 2008 LMFAs, which thrills me to pieces, and I thank everybody who recommended my stories.
I want to thank the wonderful people who have beta’ed my stories.
To the readers: Thank you so much for reading my stories. I've found that feedback is very interesting to me, as I learn new things about my own stories that way, but I don't regard it as payment for reading a story. And if you would rather read quietly, that is fine. I did it for mucho years before giving my first comment to an author.
Warnings Policy I think the most fair thing for me to do is to list these warnings/spoilers under a LJ cut on my journal. It seems the best way to balance between those who want or need warnings and those who would like to be surprised where the story goes. On archives or other communities, I will post warnings as per their policies. Multichapter stories will be warned both on the Master Story List and for each chapter. My warnings -- click to see them I'm willing to add to the list if I'm told something was left out that needs a warning.

A generous friend sent me a bunch of Sentinel zines a couple of years ago and it's okay with her if I donate them to Moonridge. So, I don't know much about pricing them. Anybody have a clue what's an okay price to ask for, since this is a charity auction?
In other news, I did turn in my Sentinel Reverse Bang, and I ended up using every bit of the extension granted to me for editing. Upon a Mountain's Edge came in at 37,500 words. I used Wordle as an editing tool. It makes a graphic pattern out of the words pasted into it and the more a word is used the bigger the size in the pattern. I was able to see which words were being used a lot and substitute more appropriate ones, if necessary. Besides, it was fun.
This is one of the patterns for Upon a Mountain's Edge. To me, it's like a snapshot overview of the story.

I'm slowly, slowwwwly, replacing the links to podfics that I had up at dear old Megaupload. So far, I've re-uploaded about eighty files to MediaFire. I haven't fixed my posts at my Lj or tspodfics yet, but if anybody has been waiting or is interested, my reader tag at Amplificathon now has the correct links to MediaFire on the posts where the tags show that the podfics haven't been archived yet. It's a lot of work for the mods at the Audio Archive, and only recently has the Archive been fixed so that archiving was possible again. Eventually, all of my podfics will be available again at the Audio Archive. My reader tag at the Audio Archive.
I'm finishing up two podfics that will be available for Moonridge,
arrow00's Sentinel fic, Somewhere to Be, and a Due South story-podfic combination of mine, The Effects of Hypothermia Upon the Heart. I hope to have Arrow's all done this week,(still working on the non music version) and then I can do a post and send the blurb to Aly.
Also thinking about having my story, or stories for the Sentinel Mini Bang do double duty as another Moonridge offering. Not sure if I'll do it. There's a word cap of 10,000 words, which means no epics. Maybe some comedy? I dunno. Still mulling over ideas. If somebody was going to pay for it, what kinds of stories would get their interest going?
Anyway, that's what I've been doing. What I haven't been doing is sticking to my resolution to go to bed by 11pm. Oh, well. I have a good reason for not being in bed. Me and the Mister are gearing up to watch The Avengers next Sunday, so I brought home THOR, tonight. The movie, not the actual Norse god. It was great.

Look here, ear disease. I feel you creeping up on me and you can just go back into hiding. I've got tons of stuff to get done today, and I don't want to put up with your shit.
So cut it out with making me feel lightheaded and dizzy, and don't even think about pulling out the whole vertigo thing. Seriously. I was done with having room spins back when I was a freshman in college, and I don't need to go back down memory lane with you.
You've been warned.
I'm off to drink a ton of water and see if that helps.

Summary for A Fair Distance: A year after Blair left Jim, and Cascade, they meet again in a small Tennessee town. Blair's been arrested and is being held for questioning at the request of the Cascade PD.
This is the third and final arc to the story, and the two earlier arcs, A Fair Distance:Running on Empty and A Fair Distance: Ball and Chain, as well as several time stamps, can be located at my LJ here or at Artifact Storage Room 3 here or at AO3 here. I believe that AO3 has a nifty feature that allows you to download onto E-readers.

A Fair Distance: Comes a Time. Chapter Seven.
For the last hour, I saw a bunch of fireflies this evening when I was walking down to the spring to get drinking water. It's magical, especially when the stars are out, too.
In other news, I'll be offering two podfics for Moonridge, Somewhere to Be by
arrow00 (four hours long) and a Due South story I wrote and podficced. (Well, I recorded half of it so far and I haven't edited any of it. I'll be working on it this coming week) More blurbs on that later. I've got to find an upload service that's free, easy to use, and doesn't require people downloading to join them. If anybody has one to recommend, I'd love to hear about it.
Megaupload, I dearly miss ye.
Also, I'll be posting the next chapter to A Fair Distance: Comes a Time , sometime tonight. I intend to do it before I go to bed. That's chapter six. Chapter five ended on a cliffhanger. This one isn't much better in that regard. Also, warnings for the story apply heavily for chapter six.
I find the spellcheck feature for posting totally useless.

Deadline for the Sentinel Reverse Bang rough draft is tomorrow night and I'm still working on the sucker.
I'm at 15,212 words. I need to be at seventy-five percent to turn it in. I'd like to get it to around 20,000 words. I'm kind of guessing about the length, but I think it will be at least that long.
Any other stragglers in the same boat still?
mab_browne?
I also need to do laundry, can dried beans (they were donated to us), bake a birthday cake for my oldest, color eggs for the baby, shove gift cards in envelopes, make some CDs for gifts, and fix picnic stuff for Easter. My daughter is turning thirty-one on Saturday and will be camping Saturday night in the Daniel Boone Forest. There are bears around, but they're pretty sure they know what to do if they have contact and they know not to leave food outside in reach.
We're not camping, but we're driving over to meet them on Sunday. We'll hang out and hike and make s'mores and eat and watch the baby (eleven months old now) look for Easter eggs.
Okay, I've got a lot to do. Time to put the beans on to soak overnight, throw some laundry in the washer, stick a blank CD in the computer and copy some music, and figure out the next scene in the story.

I'm putting this one under a cut because it could be triggery. Child abuse, animal death story follows. It's kind of stuck in my head.

The Audio Fic Archive is up and running again, and the busy mods will be working on the backlog of podfics and podbooks that need to be archived.
Also, Cybel made a post about her podbooks for the future.
All my podfics and podbooks(courtsey of Cybel)are or will be housed at the Archive. In addition, I plan on eventually having them all duplicated at two other sites, for back up purposes. This requires me to fiddle around and right now I don't have the time, but it is on the to-do list.
Right now I'll be busy with some massive editing for quite a while, and I probably won't do podfics as much as I've done in the past. While I'm not going to do any podfics this year for Moonridge, I probably will for next year.
Also, I'm not doing
amplificathon (podfic contest) this year, but I think I will do it next year, probably for the last time.

The writer's checkpoint for the Sentinel Reverse Big Bang is on March 24. That's, um, five days from now. Right? How many words have I written? Zilch. I have been writing, but it's the very last chapter of my epic WIP A Fair Distance, that I started uh, I think four years ago. There's an epiloug but that I can put off. This last chapter is eating my brain, and it's like writing with molasses for ink.
And I can't stop it to start the Big Bang, which will not be short, either. And I have other stuff to do (work, projects, walking). ARGH!
I decided not to do
amplificathon this year. (That's a podfic contest) I think they started it earlier than last year, and the timing isn't right for me.
Okay, I just needed to freak out for a moment.

This is a rant post. Sorry about that.
I buried my client's puppy this morning. In the rain. Why? Because her family is useless. They can't be depended on for anything that requires any real effort on their part. When it gets tough, they get going. She's still a teen, and in a wheelchair, but lives on her own with home health assistance during the day. They did a deal to get her this puppy, which cost her $125 dollars, although that's another complicated story, and in the three days she had it, she kept telling them it was sick. They kept insisting it wasn't. Mom even called me, and left a message saying that the puppy was healthy and the kid was being over anxious, and driving them nuts calling thirty times a day to tell them the puppy was dying.
Well, guess what? The kid was right. And when she told me what had happened, (the dog had died sometime the day before), she said that her family couldn't bury it because they didn't have a shovel.
A FUCKING SHOVEL COULDN'T BE FOUND, BOUGHT, OR BORROWED!!
Her mom had put the body in a trash bag and stuck it under a brush pile in the big back yard.
The kid was worried about how to get the dog buried, so I told her I'd come back today and bring a shovel from my house.
I made a cross to put on the little grave so she can see it from the kitchen window.
I couldn't exactly say in my documenation note that I'd spent part of the time with her today burying her puppy. I did an end run by saying I'd provided resource assistance to her. I'm the resource.
And then there's the other useless people I heard about yesterday, the family and friends of three of my clients. These lowlifes stole their medicine. FAMILY AND FRIENDS! It's bad enough when it's random crack heads breaking in and taking meds, but when it's people you trust, that's extra low.
And for an encore rant, there's my other client, who's afraid to go back to the trailer she shares with her mother (mom's left, too) because her alcoholic, sociopath brother got out of jail and is holed up there, drinking. He beats the crap out of them both, so she's staying with a friend. She says there's no help from the cops (he narcs for them, and so he's protected from his actions) or his probation officer.
Well, now that I've got all of that spouted off, I'm going to drink a cup of tea and be glad that I'm off of work till Monday.

I want to thank everybody for their crossed fingers when I posted about the bad storms that hit in our general area. If you've seen the news you've seen how destructive these two storms were that came last Wednesday and Friday up from the south to the midwest, and over to the east.
I lucked out in that I didn't have to go to work either day to do visits in the area. I worked from home doing the unending paperwork or was out of hours for the week. We were on the edge of where the tornado warning was listed, and the tornados didn't turm our way. Last year, we did have a smaller tornado hit and bounce along the ridge above us, (half a mile away) and it took down a lot of trees as it ripped through some of the hollers, and did a little damage to some buildings, but basically we dodged a bullet.
The tornado that hit in one of the counties I work in, approximately 45 miles from my house, was a EF2, 125 miles an hour monster. It was a half a mile wide and stayed on the ground for eleven miles before lifting up and heading up the mountains. This is about seven miles from my office.
According to the news reports I heard, there were about seventy homes that were destroyed or damaged. People were hurt, but nobody lost their lives here. Other communities did lose people, some incredibly sad stories have been reported on the news.
One guy videoed the storm in the county my office is in as it was coming, and some of the damage afterwards. His note said he chose not to go to the worst areas hit, and on the news they asked that people not come by to sightsee, as it was causing some problems for the responders. I think where he videod was close by his house.

Looks like we'll get pounded sometime in the next couple of hours. Nashville's got hail and tornados. Tornados have been spotted south and east of us, getting closer fairly rapidly. Also to some of our kids.
I washed dishes and clothes, in case power goes out. We went for a walk, me and my husband, and it's so windy. I kind of love the wind, always have. When I was a little girl I'd run with the wind, so that I felt it was blowing me around.
Okay, hopefully this will dodge us. At least I'm home and not driving around for work today.

Ah, I have wee blue dragons to look at on my profile. Thank you,
janedavitt,
luicat,
aerianya, and
kalijean for sending them over to roost at my place.
And I happened to be at the right place at the right time, and raised my hand when
lapetite_kiki offered an icon of her lovely picture of Blair testing Jim's senses with something a lot more pleasant than a sour glass of milk. Take a look
We've had tornados in the general area, and we're still under a watch for a couple more hours, but it looks like none will drop in on my holler. I worked a half day at home and took off the other four hours, so I was glad to not be out driving in the areas where tornados were spotted.
I made my February productivity for my job yesterday, by the skin of my teeth. February is always tough because it's a short month, but compared to other years, this February was a lot easier. The weather didn't cause roads to be shut down, which helped a lot. I took three days off, between sick days and taking some time when my grandbaby and daughter and son-in-law stopped by on their way home from visiting relatives in Texas. This meant my productivity was adjusted downward, which is a good thing, because otherwise I don't have enough clients to make the regular numbers. One lost his insurance, another landed in the pokey (again), and others couldn't keep appointments for one reason or another.
One guy was drunk as a skunk when I came over. He's off his meds, self-medicating with booze, and has very strong opinions on politics and religion, which he shared. At Great Length. I had to fend off a drunken hug from him, but it wasn't sexual. He was just so happy to have somebody to talk to. I actually got off fairly easy by getting him to turn me loose and shake hands instead. He told me he actually kissed two guys from his church who came to check on him, after giving them big ol' drunken hugs, too. Oh, to have been a fly on the wall, because when he does attend church, it's with a very conservative denomination.
I came by the next day and gave him some resource information on rehab and crisis services. I think he's high risk for making a suicide attempt, but he denied it both days. He wasn't drunk, although he had been drinking, on the second day. I can look into my crystal ball and predict that if he doesn't go back to rehab, he's going to be picked up for DUI and end up back in jail.
I'm trying to finish up my WIP Comes a Time, the third arc of A Fair Distance. Some upcoming chapters are really short, other fairly long, and I'm on Chapter Sixteen. T, my beta, is working on Chapter Six, which is about 4,500 words long.
This weekend I'm going to start my Reverse Sentinel Bang story, which will be a new story in the A Glimmering From Afar series. I'm basing it on some gorgeous art work by a very talented artist who uses paper cutting as his medium. Want a look?
The grandbaby is crawling and getting into everything. My daughter said he's teething and couldn't sleep last night and played with banging pots and pans together from three am to five am. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! The years that we raised our three (the oldest had just turned five, and the middle girl was 22 months old when the baby boy was born) are a blur, probably from being sleep deprived a lot, but I'm sure we had similar nights.
Poplar around seven months or so.

The Audio Fic Archive has been hacked and the owner, General Jin_Jur has posted that it will probably take ten days or so to restore it. So any of my posts with links to the podfic on the Archive will be redirected elsewhere. Here's her post with the details. ETA Cybel posted just now that the download direct links are also compromised. Don't try to download anything.
The podfics that I didn't have archived there were uploaded to Megaupload and since they were shut down by the Feds, I'm out of business until I upload them somewhere else again. Two kind people are sharing their webspace with me,(Thank you, Paraka and Elaine) so I'll probably use that space for backups and also to another upload site. This will take a lot of time, so for the time being, my podfics are shut down.
I'll post a notice when they are available again, either through Audio Fic Archive or the other backup sites.

So I just got home and found out Megaupload is in TROUBLE, and the site is shut down by the Dept of Justice.
All of my fanmixes and all of my podics were uploaded there, athough a lot of my podfics were mirrored at Audio Fic Archive except for the last bunch I've done in the last few months because the archive is dealing with a problem about adding new stuff. The link I posted is to my reader page.
I had a website, where I had uploaded some podfics and fanmixes so they could be streamed, but it was hacked recently and I haven't figured out how to fix it.
So. If you are trying to download something I did with a Megaupload link or listen to the streaming version, it's not going to be available.

Reader's note: First, the new podfic:

There are two versions of this podfic, a music enhanced version where I utilized music to introduce the story, indicate chapter breaks and whenever the author used a visual break in the text, and to end the story.
And then there is a music free version, for any listeners who prefer their podfic with just the reader's voice. There is silence to indicate the visual breaks in the text and to indicate a chapter is ending.

Briefly:
My minor allergy to cats has been kicked up to the major leauges today after a hour long home visit with a client and her two cats this morning. Ugh. I took antihistimines and they helped, as did the shower I took when I got home tonight, but I'm all bleary eyed. I might have to swap this client for another one if this happens again. Next time I'll take the antihistimine before I enter the place.
I'm still alive and kicking (if you missed me talking about this before, I had a death threat from an ex-client's father). The guy hasn't stormed into the office with a gun, so yay. /sarcasm. Actually, I'm betting that he's complaining bitterly to the insurance company. Ironic, if he is, since they are the ones who turned his kid down for in-home counseling. He thinks it was my fault.
The Christmas stuff is piled everywhere in boxes, and I'm not in the decorating mood.
I won a prize for my podficcing Jane Davitt's Point of Contact (because it was sooo long). Check out my cool graphic here.
My second daughter is with child, and the babe shall be born in June. They think. We're all very excited about our new little sprout (the babe's nickname for now). My seven month old grandson is too cute for words, of course. He isn't crawling yet, but he gets up on his knees and makes sounds like he's jerking weights at the gym. It cracks me up.
We lost a friend last week to cancer. My husband worked with him for a couple of years many moons ago. When Tom couldn't be left by himself any longer, my husband sat with him during the day for months last spring and again this fall. He kept Tom company and made his last days much more bearable. I'm very proud of him for stepping up to the plate to help and because he came in the role of his friend, not a paid caretaker. (in the interest of complete disclosure, my husband was given ten dollars a day, but mostly that paid for the gas for me to take him there and for a few beers). Tom's wife is a teacher and was able to stay home with him during the summer, but she had to keep working so they could keep his health insurance. We'll miss him.
My major fandom-ish project right now is podficcing Bent Justice for Whyskeyes. I'm 6/30 hours recorded, 0/30 hours edited. I'm going to do
fic_rush in a week or so, and I hope to work on another chapter for Comes a Time.
Wel, I think that's it for now. God, I wish the Christmas Elves would show up and decorate this place. I'm going to hit up the eggnog and rum, try and get in the holiday mood.

Oh, well, I was going to type out a more detailed post, but fuck it.
My boss called to let me know that the father of one my ex-kids, a five year old, has again gotten irrationally angry at me, and made a death threat. (the dad saw me yesterday and after his son and the boy's mother initiated contact with me while I was outside the center taking a phone call. I did talk to the little guy for a minute. I didn't want to snub a small child, who likes me and doesn't understand why I don't come to his house anymore. I'd seen this family in the office waiting room and had made minimal small talk to the child and mother before without the dad blowing his top, so I didn't think it was going to be a problem. Oh, but apparently it was.)
He'd like to put a bullet in my brain, and take his chances with the jury. He called the psychiarist and told him that. Oh, Joy.
The company has terminated his case, (I feel sorry for the little guy, but they have some in-home services right now). The police in the town where my office is and in the town where the family lives has been notified, and I was told to stay out of the office today. The company is going to do some sort of complaint with the police against him, but hopefully I won't have to go to court.
Isn't that just lovely holiday news?
